Read all about our 2012 visit to
Mseleni Children’s Home, South Africa.
A team of 8 people from Shoeburyness & Thorpe Bay Baptist Church have recently returned from a two week trip working with staff of the Mseleni Children’s Home and its sister charity Lulisandla Kumntwana (Hands Reaching Out To The Child).
The team travelled at their own expense, and spent the first week working with over 250 orphan and vulnerable children in the rural community, these children were attending a Psycho/Social Workshop run by the staff of Lulisandla Kumntwana and over the week had various groups dealing with Bereavement Counselling, Sex Education, Social & Life Skills, Educational Studies etc. The team from Shoeburyness helped with Craft Work, Games, etc.
Most of the children attending had lost parents through HIV/Aids, and many had to bring up their siblings on their own, others had been placed with Foster Mothers in the rural community. The folk from Shoeburyness visited local homes and saw first-hand the need for house repairs, house buiding, food parcels, etc.
The second week of the visit was spent working in the Children’s Home in Mseleni. This home caters for 40 children and the team spent time organising crafts, games, and building up relationships with the children and staff. They also spent the week doing general repair work around the home and encouraging and working alongside the teenage boys to re-decorate their rooms. This work helps with teaching Life Skills.
On previous visits teams had built new houses for foster families, and also a Children’s Playground at the Children’s Home. Both the playground and houses are being well used!
Shoeburyness & Thorpe Bay Baptist Church is in it’s third year of supporting this work, and recently a separate UK Charity entitled “Reach Out To The Child SA” was set up to continue this support. So far this year (2012) over £26,000 has been raised and sent to South Africa. Stuart & Diane Hardingham would be happy to share information about the work with any individuals or groups and tickets for the concert are also now available.
